Richard Kilpatrick will join Bowen as an Associate Professor in fall 2026 after having served as a Visiting Professor in academic years 2024-2026 teaching courses in contracts, sales, and maritime law. Prior to joining the Bowen faculty, he was Associate Professor at the College of Charleston, School of Business, in Charleston, South Carolina. He also previously taught at Northeastern Illinois University, School of Business and Management, in Chicago, Illinois, and practiced at a Chicago law firm. Professor Kilpatrick is a scholar of maritime and international commercial law and is the author of a broad range of law review articles, book chapters, and essays on the subject. His book聽Geopolitical Disruption in Shipping: Sanctions, War, and Force Majeure聽was published by Hart (Bloomsbury) in May 2026.

Professor Kilpatrick frequently speaks at conferences and invited lectures around the world, and maintains various external affiliations, including as an Academic Fellow at the National University of Singapore Centre for Maritime Law, an Associate Member at the University of Aberdeen Centre for Private International Law and Transnational Governance, a Fellow at the European Law Institute, and an Academic Member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States. He earned his Juris Doctor from Tulane University Law School and is a member of the Illinois bar.
