The Department of Psychological Sciences has a set of advising procedures in place to empower all majors with the knowledge necessary to graduate with their degree. Please consider the information provided here to ensure you understand the process.

Please verify that there are seats available in the courses you select. If not, please indicate whether you will join a waitlist. Also, consider listing alternative courses in case you do not get a seat in your preferred course. If so, please indicate in the notes which courses you are considering as alternatives.

Late advising will begin Thursday, May 14. Please watch your university email for additional instructions and information.

Advising Process

1. When to Take Certain Classes

The goal should be to finish the core curriculum as soon as possible, so you can incorporate courses for the minor and foreign language sequence as you work your way through the major.

Freshman Year

Concentrate on completing core curriculum courses.

Before you can take your first psychology class, PSYC 20043 (was 2300) Psychology and the Human Experience, you must first finish RHET 10103 (was 1311) Composition I.

Be sure to take MATH 11003 (was 1302) or MATH 11103 (was 1321) and earn a C or better. This is a prerequisite for PSYC 33554 (was 3435) Statistics and Methods.

Sophomore Year

Once you complete RHET 10103 (was 1311) and MATH 11003 (was 1302)/MATH 11103 (was 1321), take PSYC 20043 (was 2300). In your second semester, you are ready to take PSYC 33554 (was 3435) Statistics & Methods and PSYC 31233 (was 3320) Applied Psychology. Start working on your foreign language sequence courses and choose a minor.

Junior Year

The following will ensure you are prepared for your senior year.

Plan to take:

One course from the following:

Senior Year

4. Complete and Submit the Course Selection eForm

The Late Advising e-form can be found here. This e-form is required for an advising appointment and must include your course selections. For more guidance about the advising process, please refer to the handouts in Step 2 and Step 3 above.

Once submitted, the form will be reviewed by an advisor on duty. If the form is approved you will be sent a link to set up an appointment. If the form requires corrections, you will need to revise and resubmit the form before you can set up an appointment.

Required minimum hours for scholarship or financial aid*

Students who receive financial aid (federal or other funding sources) maybe required to enroll in a minimum number of hours. Students are responsible to know whether they are subject to a minimum number of hours and to comply with that requirement. Attempting, after a semester starts, to correct this lack of hours may not be possible. This may have funding, or other, implications.

Core curriculum courses should be completed early in your college career.

Developmental courses (course numbers lower than 10000) DO NOT count toward graduation.

Minimum hours to graduation are 120 total hours.

Graduation hours must include 45 upper level hours (30000/40000 level).

Students must complete all requirements toward their core, major, minor and cultural awareness competency. These combined may not reach the 120 hours required for graduation. Some students may be eligible for electives outside their major or minor. Others, (e.g., transfer students, those who changed their major/minor), may exceed the minimum 120-hour requirement.

Practicum, Internship, Independent Study, or Research Experience may not be included in the eForm without prior, written, approval from the instructor. Interest in such courses may be expressed in the Notes section. Forms with these courses and without prior approval, will be returned.
