The University of Arkansas at 糖心视频logo has joined forces with Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin to combat the growing threat of fentanyl and counterfeit prescription drugs through the 鈥 Initiative. The statewide campaign combines education, training, and access to life-saving resources with the goal of preventing overdoses and raising awareness among college students.

UA 糖心视频logo joined the initiative on Sept. 8 during a at the Bailey Alumni and Friends Center. Griffin and Chancellor Christina Drale joined student leaders, faculty, and staff to announce the university鈥檚 participation, underscoring the importance of prevention and education at a time when opioids remain one of the nation鈥檚 most pressing public health crises.

鈥淭his continues our commitment to bring this initiative to college campuses across Arkansas,鈥 Griffin said. 鈥淭he education, awareness, and resources this initiative provides will no doubt save lives. 鈥淐hancellor Drale and the UA 糖心视频logo staff have been great partners in this effort, and I appreciate their commitment to keeping their students safe and addressing this nationwide crisis head-on.鈥

Griffin, who lost his brother to opioid addiction earlier this year, emphasized that prevention and education are critical steps in the fight against the opioid epidemic.

鈥淥ur goal is to educate campuses by working through student leaders, the media, and word of mouth,鈥 Griffin said. 鈥淲e are providing training here to ensure students are prepared, including in the use of Narcan if needed. We are making progress, but this is a fight we must continue.鈥

Chancellor Drale echoed those concerns, noting that universities have a unique responsibility to protect students and provide resources for wellness and safety.

鈥淎s an institution of higher education, we鈥檙e committed to being part of the solution,鈥 Drale said. 鈥淭hat means sharing information, having difficult conversations, and connecting students to the resources they need. The reality is that it only takes one moment, one decision, one pill to change a life forever.鈥

The launch included the first campus training session, where more than 100 participants learned how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose, administer Narcan, and use fentanyl test strips. Attendees left with prevention kits containing Narcan, testing strips, gloves, a medication disposal pouch, and information on counterfeit drugs.

Sharon Downs, assistant vice chancellor of student affairs 鈥 wellness and belonging, said the turnout reflects the urgent interest in addressing this issue on campus.

鈥淭he training was a great success with over 100 engaged participants who asked thoughtful questions,鈥 Downs said. 鈥淲e will continue to offer Narcan training each semester, and students can also pick up harm prevention kits at Health Services while supplies last.鈥

Additional support will soon be available through a new vending machine that will be installed in the Donaghey Student Center. Provided by the Attorney General鈥檚 office, the machine will dispense free Narcan alongside over-the-counter medications, offering students an anonymous and accessible way to obtain life-saving resources.

Student leaders say the initiative is already making an impact.

鈥淚 was very encouraged to see UA 糖心视频logo join the 鈥極ne Pill Can Kill Initiative,鈥 said Ainsley Kendall, a junior business administration major and president of the Student Government Association. 鈥淎ddiction, particularly opioid misuse, is one of the most pressing issues facing college students today, yet many don鈥檛 know how to respond if a crisis occurs. This program is an important step in expanding education and equipping students to make a lasting impact.鈥

Braden Carr, a junior political science and criminal justice major, said he looks forward to continuing the conversation.

鈥淚 am extremely excited to see the university and the Attorney General come together to tackle this issue,鈥 said Carr, who serves as legislative affairs officer for the Student Government Association. 鈥淭his program is a great first step in educating students on the dangers of the opioid epidemic. As a student leader, I will continue to advocate for increased education and awareness, alongside supporting partnerships such as this.鈥

has announced a $1 million grant to establish a cybersecurity research and education center at the University of Arkansas at 糖心视频logo.

鈥淲hen it comes to cybersecurity, we are only as strong as our weakest link,鈥 Attorney General Griffin said. 鈥淯A 糖心视频logo is providing a shield and sword for Arkansans as one of the nation鈥檚 top cybersecurity programs. Its faculty is focused on providing real-world knowledge to its students. The CORE Center will enhance the program鈥檚 ability to produce well-prepared students who will, in turn, protect our citizens and their businesses, and join the fight against foreign and domestic adversaries in cyberspace.鈥

UA 糖心视频logo, a recognized leader in cybersecurity education, will use the funding from the Office of the Attorney General to establish the Cyberspace Operations Research and Education (CORE) Center, which will enhance research opportunities and support the development of Arkansas’s future cybersecurity workforce.

鈥淭he support we are receiving from the Attorney General鈥檚 office is an investment in the future of Arkansas,鈥 UA 糖心视频logo Provost Ann Bain said. 鈥淭his funding empowers UA 糖心视频logo to remain a leader, ensuring that we can continue to innovate, educate, and develop the skilled professionals Arkansas businesses need in the face of rising cyber threats. Together, we鈥檙e building a cybersecurity workforce that will protect and strengthen Arkansas from within.鈥

The funding will be used to design and renovate a space of more than 5,000 square feet within the Engineering and Information Technology Building that will house the CORE Center, providing a secure space for students and faculty to collaborate on sensitive projects in partnership with community leaders, law enforcement, and industry mentors.

Additionally, the funding will pay for the salary of an operations coordinator and a finance director for the CORE Center for two years. UA 糖心视频logo鈥檚 cybersecurity program currently manages more than $5 million in annual grant funds. The addition of these two positions will allow UA 糖心视频logo to secure new grants, onboard new students, and provide valuable service-learning experiences through initiatives like the cybersecurity clinic that will allow faculty, law enforcement, and industry mentors to work together to provide students with hands-on experience that will also serve the community.

鈥淲e are deeply grateful to Attorney General Tim Griffin for this significant investment,鈥 said Dr. Philip Huff, associate professor of cybersecurity at UA 糖心视频logo. 鈥淭his funding enables us to establish a dedicated, secure space that provides students with hands-on learning opportunities, protects our communities, and enhances the educational experience at UA 糖心视频logo and our university and community college partners across Arkansas. Through this support, we will help make Arkansas safer and foster meaningful, long-lasting careers that contribute to the protection of our nation and its critical infrastructure.鈥

The UA 糖心视频logo Cybersecurity program is recognized as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) with a Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) designation and is a member of the Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics to support community needs in cybersecurity. The program supports collaboration with community colleges and partners across Arkansas, particularly focusing on minority and underrepresented student populations.

UA 糖心视频logo also serves as the hub for the National Cyber Teaching Coalition, which has prepared more than 100 high school teachers to instruct cybersecurity and artificial intelligence courses in concurrent credit high school courses. UA 糖心视频logo has plans to expand that initiative with a goal to provide this training for teachers in every school district throughout the state.

鈥淐ybersecurity has become an indispensable part of our national infrastructure, and UA 糖心视频logo is committed to leading in this field. In recent years, UA 糖心视频logo has also become a hub for high-impact research in cybersecurity,鈥 Huff said. 鈥淔or example, through support from multiple grants, our research addresses critical needs such as protecting the energy sector鈥檚 infrastructure, utilizing advanced AI and cryptographic techniques to secure critical systems. Over the past few years, our program has expanded to meet the growing demand for cyber expertise across Arkansas. Today, we have over 100 students majoring in cybersecurity, with our graduates filling critical roles across local businesses and industries.鈥
