UA ��Ƶlogo Sees Unprecedented Interest in Scholarships for Fall 2020

Due to an unprecedented demand in scholarships, the University of Arkansas at ��Ƶlogo announced the merit-based scholarship deadline has been extended for new students to Aug. 17. As of the original Aug. 1 deadline, a record-breaking number of more than 1,900 applications were received. These scholarships are made possible in part by the recent largest-ever anonymous donation to help students achieve a world-class education at UA ��Ƶlogo. “Due to the overwhelming demand for scholarships, we are excited to extend the deadline to accommodate first-time and transfer students,” said UA ��Ƶlogo Chancellor Christina Drale. “In this economic downturn, many are still deciding if they can go to school, and this extension will increase this opportunity. Our transformational strategy and tremendous community support allow us to provide much-needed support to students.” Both transfer and first-time students applying for merit-based scholarships are eligible for this deadline extension as the university prepares its online and in-person classes for the Fall 2020 semester. “We are eager to award the scholarships and by extending our deadline we continue to create opportunities for student success,” said Jonathan Coleman, director of financial aid and scholarships at UA ��Ƶlogo. “The response has been very clear. Scholarships are more important than ever.” New and transfer students will be considered for scholarships by simply applying for admission. No further forms are needed. UA ��Ƶlogo will begin awarding scholarships following the extended deadline as students gear up to get back to learning.�� “Historical trends show an increase in demand for higher education during economic downturns such as this,” said Dr. Michael Pakko, chief economist and state economic forecaster at UA ��Ƶlogo. “That interest is clearly translating to a need for scholarships and increased applications. UA ��Ƶlogo Increases Transformational Scholarship Opportunities for Students for Fall Semester

The University of Arkansas at ��Ƶlogo has set an Aug. 1 deadline for new and continuing students to access new need-based scholarship funds made possible by the May 21 announcement of an unprecedented gift of $25 million from an anonymous donor, the largest single gift in the 93-year history of the institution.�� The new funds will be available for new and continuing students who apply by Aug. 1, 2020. Potential students that meet eligibility requirements and who apply for admission between now and Aug. 1 will automatically be matched with the new available funds to be applied to their cost of attendance for the coming academic year. Current students can apply for the scholarships simply via the scholarship application form and by completing a FAFSA form for the academic year they are entering. Learn more on the Scholarships website. “There is no better time to take control of your future at UA ��Ƶlogo,” said Chancellor Christina Drale. “Whether you’re a new high school graduate or wanting to pursue a new career, we have taken strategic measures to transform the institution with focus on in-demand programs and pathways for student success.” Ten million of the $25 million gift is designated for a Student Success Endowment Fund that will expand and permanently support the university’s student retention and success initiatives. Among the first programs of its kind in the nation, students will be able to access specialized personnel serving as success coaches and care team members who will be available when students need help acclimating to the college environment or when challenging personal or academic issues arise. The availability of these resources for students on an as-needed or ongoing basis has been proven to increase student confidence and persistence and, ultimately, improve graduation success rates. UA ��Ƶlogo has also transformed its Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and drastically improved the process of applying for aid, making it easier for students to access financial assistance. “About 70 percent of the new students at UA ��Ƶlogo have unmet financial need, with the average amount of unmet financial need being about $8,200,” said Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Chief Data Officer Cody Decker. “This generous gift to UA ��Ƶlogo will provide a transformative opportunity for both current and future students for years to come.”

Discover event set for Oct. 19, Nov. 2

The University of Arkansas at ��Ƶlogo’s premier student recruitment event, Discover Day, will offer two chances for and parents to explore everything UA ��Ƶlogo has to offer.�� Discover Day events will be held on Friday, Oct. 19, and Friday, Nov. 2. Check-in begins at 9 a.m. in the Jack Stephens Center, and the event will end around 2 p.m. This free open house includes information sessions, campus activities hosted by student organizations, guided tours, a campus picnic, social media contests, and free UA ��Ƶlogo goodies. Participating students will visit an academic college of their choice, meet with current UA ��Ƶlogo students, and experience campus housing and dining. Additionally, students will have a chance to win six scholarships at both events. A $1,000 scholarship will be given during the welcome session that begins at 10 a.m. in the Jack Stephens Center. Students also will have the chance to win one of five $250 scholarships by following the event at @ualradmissions on Snapchat and sending UA ��Ƶlogo a photo with #DiscoverLR. Scholarships will be given for the best pictures in the following categories: Best Trojan Spirit, Most Creative, Best Use of Prop, Best Selfie with Filter, and Best Overall. A special filter has been created by 2012 UA ��Ƶlogo graduate Cyrene Quiamco and will be available on Snapchat during the Discover Day events. Formerly a web designer for Verizon Wireless, Quiamco has made a career for herself on Snapchat. Quiamco, who goes by the handle on all her social media accounts, created , a website that showcases the work of Snapchat artists, giving their creations an extended “11th second” in the spotlight. Gradfest to kick off March 6 and 7

University of Arkansas at ��Ƶlogo students who are graduating this spring can find all of their commencement day needs at Gradfest from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 6-7.�� The event will be held in the Lower Level Concourse in Donaghey Student Center between the UA ��Ƶlogo Bookstore and Health Services Center. The deadline to apply for graduation is Friday, March 2. Caps and gowns will be available for purchase throughout Gradfest, along with official UA ��Ƶlogo class rings and graduation announcements. Representatives from several university departments, including financial aid, records and registration, and graduate school will be present to speak with students about graduation applications, post-graduate opportunities, and commencement information. The Alumni Association will speak with students about the benefits of becoming a member, as well as the memorabilia they offer, including personalized bricks and college license plates. Students who attend the event will have the opportunity to complete a survey to be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $300 UA ��Ƶlogo Graduate Packet. Included will be a cap and gown, a personalized brick, an alumni t-shirt, an alumni license plate frame, and an official UA ��Ƶlogo diploma frame. Book sale to raise money for study abroad scholarships

A University of Arkansas at ��Ƶlogo professor is collecting book donations to raise money for UA ��Ƶlogo students hoping to attend a summer language program in France.�� The Department of World Languages will host a book sale in April to raise scholarship funds for students who wish to travel abroad this summer. To assist with the book sale, the department welcomes donations until Wednesday, March 28. Donors can drop books off at the department office in Stabler Hall Room 301 or contact Zac Hagins, assistant professor of French, at zrhagins@ualr.edu to schedule a time to have the books picked up. “As an undergraduate I was fortunate enough to study abroad in France and Japan, so I know the transformative power of the study abroad adventure,” Hagins said. “Every student who wants to experience life in another culture should have that chance.” With students juggling family, work, and school, Hagins knows that meeting the financial obligations of studying abroad can be tough. Having led the summer French program, he also knows the importance of students being able to travel and experience another culture first-hand. “Many dream of having the opportunity, but they worry about taking out loans or working extra hours to save enough money to participate,” he said. “The book sale allows us to help at least one student offset the costs of realizing his or her dream. With any luck, the book sale will continue to grow, and we will be able to help even more students in the future.” With the funds raised from the book sale, Hagins will provide a scholarship to a student participating in the World Languages Department Summer Language Program in Orléans, France, who demonstrates a financial need. In 2017, the UA ��Ƶlogo community donated 40 boxes of books for the first World Languages Department book sale and raised $400. Rebekah Duke, a French major who graduated in August 2017, received the first Department of World Languages Octave Uzanne Scholarship for Summer Study Abroad in France. The scholarship helped Duke attend a faculty-led summer language program to Paris and Orleans, France. The scholarship is named in honor of Octave Uzanne, a French writer, journalist, and book publisher who��founded the Société des Bibliophiles Contemporaines and served as its first president. Noted for his literary research on 18th-century authors, Uzanne also researched fashion and femininity and wrote novels and fantasy books.

Middle Eastern Studies program seeking grant applications

University of Arkansas at ��Ƶlogo faculty and students are invited to apply for grants to support activities, research and scholarship in Middle Eastern studies.�� The Middle Eastern Studies Program will award student grants of up to $2,500, faculty grants of up to $3,000, and adjunct faculty grants of up to $500. Faculty and students are encouraged to think creatively about the activities the grants could fund. Projects related to any aspect of the Middle East or Middle Eastern studies are eligible. Faculty and students from all majors and departments are encouraged to apply. Examples of student grants include participation in an archaeological expedition in a Middle Eastern country, historical research, summer language study program, study abroad in a Middle Eastern country, and internships. Faculty grants have supported such activities as the creation of new courses, bringing a speaker to campus, and research activities. Applications can be submitted until Feb. 1, 2018, or until all available funds have been awarded. All grant recipients must deliver a public program on their project for the campus community and by Jan. 31, 2019, submit a report documenting how the funds were used. UA ��Ƶlogo Bookstore seeks applications for 2018 Book Grant Awards

The University of Arkansas at ��Ƶlogo Campus Bookstore will award $10,000 in student scholarships in spring 2018.�� The Bookstore will award $500 scholarships to 20 UA ��Ƶlogo students through its 2018 Book Grant Awards. The Bookstore Advisory Committee will consider academic achievement, leadership, community service, and financial need when selecting the winners. The scholarship is open to students with a minimum 2.5 GPA, undergraduate students who have completed nine credit hours, and graduate students who have completed six credit hours. Interested students can apply for the scholarship by filling out this online application. The deadline to apply is Friday, Dec. 1. University of Arkansas at ��Ƶlogo students can learn some valuable skills to prepare them for college life during the September Student Success Workshop Series.�� Students will get the chance to take career assessment tests and learn how these results relate to UA ��Ƶlogo majors, research career salaries, and set career goals during the “What is My Major? Career Exploration and Goals” Workshop at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, and Wednesday, Sept. 13, in Donaghey Student Center Room 205D. Academic Advisor Yvette Palmer and Counselor Aresh Assadi will lead the workshop. The next workshop, “Who am I, Really? Study Strategies for College Success” will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, and Wednesday, Sept. 20, in Donaghey Student Center Room 205D. Brandon Scott, academic mentor and administrative specialist, will lead a workshop where participants take personality, learning style, and brain dominance assessments to discover more information about themselves. The results can be used to improve studying, reading, note taking, and test preparation skills. In the final September workshop, Carlia Smith, director of financial aid, and Allison Holland, director of the Writing Center, will lead the “How Can I Get More Money for College? Financing Your College Education Workshop” at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, and Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Donaghey Student Center Room 205D. Students will learn about scholarship and grant opportunities, UA ��Ƶlogo financial aid and student account policies, and how to write a scholarship essay.

New director of financial aid appointed at UALR

Dean Kahler, vice chancellor of enrollment management at the University of Arkansas at ��Ƶlogo, has announced that Carlia Smith is the new director of financial aid at UALR. Smith’s appointment is effective Sept. 2. “Ms. Smith brings with her an outstanding customer service philosophy and wonderful financial aid experience. I am particularly impressed with her vision for the future of financial aid and look forward to having her join UALR,” Kahler said. Smith’s professional experience includes consulting work with Baptist Health Schools, Tulane University in New Orleans, St. Louis University in Missouri, as well as UALR, where she developed an internal audit system to analyze the accuracy of the federal verification process. She has worked at the University of Arkansas System as associate vice president for student financial services, Lyon College as director of financial aid, and Hendrix College as director of financial aid. Smith has served as president of the Board of Directors for the Student Loan Guarantee Foundation of Arkansas (SLGFA) and was a six-year member of the board. She is an active member of the Arkansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and numerous other organizations. Smith received her MBA from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. She graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. degree from Lyon College in Batesville.

GradFest offers convenient commencement shopping

The University of Arkansas at ��Ƶlogo announces its biannual GradFest event, in which candidates for spring 2014 graduation may order their official graduation announcements and purchase their cap and gowns in one convenient location.��

Students can stop by the event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 5 and 6, in the lower concourse of the Donaghey Student Center, between Student Health Services and the UALR Bookstore.

During the event, students may also take care of other important items related to graduation, including:

Ordering class ring
Meeting with Alumni Association representatives regarding membership benefits and obtaining a personalized brick and collegiate license plate
Inquiring about graduate school programs and admission requirements
Visiting with Office of Records and Registration representatives concerning graduation application and commencement information
Meeting with Financial Aid representatives for an exit interview, which is mandatory for students with loans, loan indebtedness, debt management and lender information
Completing the graduation survey for a chance to win a $300 UALR Graduation Packet to include a cap and gown, personalized brick, alumni T-shirt, alumni license plate frame, and official UALR diploma frame.
