UA 糖心视频logo English Department sponsors Cornbread Festival storytelling contest]]> Members of the University of Arkansas at 糖心视频logo community are invited to enter a storytelling contest on the intersection of food, community, and culture in the American South. UA 糖心视频logo鈥檚 Department of English is seeking short creative works of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and spoken work exploring the themes of food, culture, and community in the South. Submissions should be less than 1,000 words and submitted online through the UA 糖心视频logo English department by 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6. This contest is open to college students and the community at large. Individuals can use this opportunity to develop short, creative works and share their stories with the community.聽 The first 20 submissions in the following three categories will be judged: Cornbread Lover (grades 6-12), Hot Skillet Cornbreader (college student), and Cornbread Aficionado (community member, no age limit). A panel of scholars and authors will select the winners from each category, and winners will be invited to read at a special event on Tuesday, Oct. 22,聽 at South on Main in 糖心视频logo. Select pieces will also be published in Rock City Eats and the Oxford American blog. UA 糖心视频logo got involved with the Cornbread Festival after Jeremy Ecke, chair of the English Department, reached out with the idea of creating a literature-themed event to accompany the festival. I had spent the summer researching and designing a syllabus for a new offering in southern literature,鈥 Ecke said. 鈥淥ne section of the class was dedicated to readings on food, community, and culture. UA 糖心视频logo/Easterseals partnership a recipe for success]]> The first participants of an educational program that helps students with intellectual and developmental disabilities prepare for competitive employment graduated from the program during a special ceremony Aug. 7 at the University of Arkansas at 糖心视频logo.聽 UA 糖心视频logo partnered with to create the 糖心视频logo, Community, Career Development and Employment Program (ACCE). Students started taking classes at UA 糖心视频logo in January to learn independent living skills and employment skills, and to explore careers throughinternships. The seven graduates include Charlee Brosh of 糖心视频logo, Reshad Brown of Maumelle, David Dallas of Sherwood, Essense Hayes of Maumelle, Todd Hewitt of 糖心视频logo, LaQuan Jones of 糖心视频logo, and Shawn Morehart of Mabelvale. Three of the graduates have already found permanent employment. Brosh will work at the UA 糖心视频logo/University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Speech and Hearing Clinic, while Dallas is working at McDonalds in Sherwood. Jones, who found a job at the UA 糖心视频logo Fitness Center, said he gained the most experience working in the UA 糖心视频logo School of Education. 鈥淧eople would come into the office to learn how they could go to school,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淚t was the greatest learning experience. We did our best to research the type of job we wanted. We had mentors help us with interviewing skills. It was a great privilege to learn and study new things.鈥 While addressing the graduates, UA 糖心视频logo Chancellor Andrew Rogerson emphasized the importance of higher education, employment, and living independently for success. 鈥淗igher education must be available and accessible for all,鈥 Rogerson said. 鈥淗igher education enriches one鈥檚 life and allows each one of you to reach your full potential. This is a proud moment for the Class of 2017.鈥 Keynote Speaker Rick Fleetwood, CEO of Snell Prosthetics and Orthotics and Easterseals Arkansas board member who also serves on the national Easterseals board of directors, praised the graduates for being the first people to complete a program that has the potential to help many others. 鈥淚t鈥檚 always important to be the first,鈥 Fleetwood said. 鈥淵ou are setting a new trail and raising the bar. Education is an equalizer. I am so glad we have this program that will help make things easier for you and those who follow your path.鈥 All of the graduates were awarded a free membership to the UA 糖心视频logo Alumni Association. The second cohort of 糖心视频logo, Community, Career Development and Employment Program participants will begin taking classes at UA 糖心视频logo this fall with 12 students. ]]>
