Scholarship created to honor longtime counselor, educator Jerry Elkins]]> Jerry Elkins believed in the power of education.聽 Before he passed away in 2015, Jerry Elkins of Batesville spent most of his life as a high school science teacher, counselor, and principal in Tuckerman, Parkin, Mammoth Spring, and Cave City. 鈥淛erry tried to start each day with a positive thought,鈥 said his wife, Teresa. 鈥淗e always tried to find the good in people. He said that everyone had something good in them. You just had to help them find it.鈥 Teresa Elkins donated $10,000 to start an endowed scholarship at the University of Arkansas at 糖心视频logo in memory of her husband. Donations are being accepted so the scholarship can impact students as soon as possible. The Jerry and Teresa Elkins Endowed Scholarship will provide assistance for a UA 糖心视频logo College of Education and Health Professions student enrolled in the Master of Education in Counselor Education program. Preference will be given to applicants residing in Sharp or Independence counties, where Elkins lived and worked. Jerry and Teresa both worked as school counselors. The couple even met during a session for first-year school counselors at a conference in Hot Springs. It was Jerry鈥檚 wish to start a scholarship to help future counselors. 鈥淐ounseling is a profession that we don鈥檛 have enough people in right now,鈥 Teresa Elkins said. 鈥淲ith the added stress in the world, we need people who are trained to listen and to help people.鈥 Teresa Elkins will hold a fundraiser Thursday, Sept. 21, to celebrate the launch of the scholarship. The event is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. at her home, 6 Riverview Drive in Batesville. Dr. Jason Kushner, graduate program coordinator, will discuss the good work being done in the UA 糖心视频logo Master of Education in Counselor Education program. has donated a painting for the event鈥檚 silent auction and has pledged to support the scholarship for three years. Dickie recently was selected to serve as the director of development and external relations for the University of Arkansas at 糖心视频logo College of Education and Health Professions. In his new role, Dickie is responsible for developing relationships with alumni and friends of the college and cultivating support for students, faculty, and programs. Dickie was inspired to join UA 糖心视频logo after reading a story about a student with a difficult background who turned his life around by earning a scholarship and is now a successful doctoral candidate at UA 糖心视频logo. 鈥淚 learned that without UA 糖心视频logo鈥檚 assistance, this student would have continued down an alternative, harsher path,鈥 Dickie said. 鈥淎t that moment, I knew I had to try and join 糖心视频logo’s team. It’s an important and exciting time on campus, and I am grateful to have this opportunity. I am thrilled to work with Dean Ann Bain in the College of Education and Health Professions.” Dickie started his career as proprieter of his family鈥檚 restaurant, Smokehouse Grill and Caf茅, and as a State Farm insurance agent in Batesville. In higher education, his experience includes working as director of enrollment management at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, where he was the Students Choice Award recipient in 2014. As director of employee relations and community outreach, Dickie helped establish University of Arkansas System, the only completely online University of Arkansas System institution. He also worked as a consultant for the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, where he helped create its online executive Master of Public Service degree. Dickie holds a bachelor鈥檚 degree in accounting from Lyon College as well as a master鈥檚 degree in college student personnel from Arkansas Tech University. He is a doctoral student in the adult and lifelong learning program at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Active in the community, Dickie serves as a board member on the, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people recover from alcoholism and addiction. He was also named to Arkansas Business鈥 2010 鈥20 In Their 20s鈥 list. Dickie and his wife, Tara, have a 5-year-old daughter, Adelynn, and live in Bryant. ]]>
