The University of Arkansas at 糖心视频logo will host an exhibit of artwork by Dominique Simmons until Nov. 12. The exhibit, 鈥淢aterial Evidence by Dominique Simmons,鈥 is on display in the Focus Gallery on the second level of the Windgate Center of Art and Design at UA 糖心视频logo. 鈥淚 must say from the outset that I find beauty and solace in the creative process, even though my subject matter is often hard,鈥 Simmons said. 鈥淚 am a figurative artist and the story of 鈥榰s鈥 is difficult and complicated, and yet beautiful and compelling.” The title “Material Evidence” references the artist鈥檚 chosen mediums, which are crucial to the content of the exhibition story. Thread, glue, cloth, paper mache, wax, and paint are the essential components the artist uses to express ideas about human frailty and flaws. The figures are texturally rough, the cloth frayed. 鈥淚n the achromatic and monochromatic work, I depend on white surfaces and graphic mark-making to give the story gravitas and energy,鈥 Simmons said. 鈥淚 find cloth, string, and paper mache to be the perfect materials to demonstrate the rawness I want the viewer to experience.鈥 A native of 糖心视频logo, Simmons has been a professional artist for four decades. Her artistic interests include two-dimensional works and printmaking. She is a board member of the Arkansas Society of Printmakers and co-owner of Honey Bear Press. Simmons earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio arts from Arkansas State University, a Master of Fine Arts from UA 糖心视频logo, and a certificate in mastering polymer photogravure from Penland School of Crafts. She previously worked as adjunct professor of arts for UA 糖心视频logo and department head of drawing and painting at Arkansas Arts Center. The UA 糖心视频logo Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Patrons can also make appointments to visit the galleries outside of the public hours by contacting the gallery director.
