Student Spotlight: Phoenix Douglass
Phoenix Douglass is pursuing a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling at UA 糖心视频logo and is dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others through the field of mental health. As an active member of the Graduate Student Association, Phoenix has embraced opportunities to grow as both a student and a leader while building connections across campus. In this Graduate Student Spotlight, Phoenix reflects on the graduate school journey, the challenges overcome, and the advice Phoenix hopes will encourage future graduate students to pursue their goals with confidence.
What inspired you to pursue your graduate degree at UA 糖心视频logo?
I chose UALR for graduate school because I was already a student. I am also moving out of state, after I obtain my Master’s degree, and did not want to move twice.聽I want my children to understand how important a higher education is. My mother made it to her sophomore year as an undergrad, but had to drop out because she got pregnant with me and my father didn’t support her. She often spoke about how much she wished that she could go back to school. She passed away and I wanted to honor her by not only finishing my Bachelor’s degree, but going beyond it.
Can you share a moment, opportunity, or experience that had a meaningful impact on your success?
Counseling Services and the Disability Resource Center have been instrumental to my success on this campus. This is also my first semester as a graduate student. Representing graduate students as a Senator, especially one who is visibly disabled and older, has already been rewarding.
What advice would you give to someone considering graduate school at UA 糖心视频logo?
I would advise future graduate students to go ahead and pursue an upper-level degree, even if it seems impossible. I came back to school after a car accident that left me in a wheelchair, raising two kids alone, and an over 20 year absence. If I can do it, then anyone can!
What are your career goals after graduation?
My career goals after graduation are to pursue my LPC, work in a hospital, then open a private practice.
