Lecture: Thursday, September 28, 6:30-7:30 PM in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building

The photographs of Shana and Robert ParkeHarrison offer visual poems of loss, human struggle, and personal exploration within landscapes scarred by technology and over-use. ParkeHarrison鈥檚 work has received critical acclaim from sources such as the New York Times, which named their book The Architect’s Brother, as one of the top 10 photography books of 2000. Their work is found in private and public collections, including the National Museum of American Art at the  Smithsonian Institution; the Whitney Museum of American Art;  the Los Angeles County Museum; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the George Eastman House.

This lecture is in person. Please note that the lecture is not at the Windgate Center for Art + Design, it is at the Fine Arts Building, located on the opposite side of Coleman Creek.

We will welcome Doug Stowe as the next artWORKs Series for the Spring 2023 Semester.

Doug Stowe began his woodworking career in 1976. He is the author of 14 woodworking books and frequently writes for a number of woodworking magazines. He retired this year from teaching grades k-12 at the Clear Spring School in Eureka Springs, Arkansas where his Wisdom of the Hands program, emphasizing the value of learning all things hands-on has led a nation-wide renewal of interest in Woodworking education. His Guide to Woodworking with Kids (Blue Hills Press) is in line with that effort. His most recent book, The Wisdom of Our Hands: Crafting, A Life, (Linden Publishing) provides insight into the ways working with our hands leads directly to the renewal and regeneration of self, family, community and human culture.

The public lecture is on the 14th from 6 pm at the Windgate center of art and design, room 101. The workshop will run in the Furniture/Woodworking on Mar 15th and 16th.

We will welcome Funlola Coker as the next artWORKs Series for the Spring 2023 Semester.

Funlola Coker is a metalsmith from Lagos, Nigeria. In 2007 Coker moved to Memphis, TN to pursue a BFA in Sculpture from Memphis College of Art. Funlola is fascinated by history, the evolution of culture and storytelling. Funlola creates narrative sculptures that call on nostalgic memories and moments of the mundane that are held dear. Coker has taught at notable craft institutions such as Snow Farm: The New England Craft Program and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Funlola鈥檚 work has been exhibited at Brooklyn Metalworks, the Fuller Craft Museum, Tone Gallery in Memphis and the National Ornamental Metal Museum. In 2020, Coker received the Arts Memphis Arts Accelerator grant, and was a 2022 Thayer Fellowship recipient from the SUNY Rockefeller Institute of Government. Funlola holds an MFA in Metal from the State University of New York at New Paltz.
